Pumice
"When i was about 12 living in Matata we got a video machine and I'd tape Radio With Pictures and watch it on monday after school. i saw Tall Dwarfs ""Turning Brown & Torn In Two"" and i clearly remember thinking ""thats not music, these people are evil"". But i still spent ages repeatedly watching and pausing through the flickering clip trying to figure it out.
When i was about 16 i started getting Tall Dwarfs records out of the Hamilton library. They still made me uncomfortable but i peservered.
By the time ""Seizure"" came out i was a complete fan. The ""Guppiplus"" record was the best soundtrack for getting stoned with friends one of whom went on to become a murderer, but best of all was that even tho i knew nothing about playing music i knew i could probably play those songs. Wrote my 5th form English research project on Chris.
""Grand Mal"" seemed like the heaviest song id ever heard. I didnt even know what epilepsy was which made it heavier.
When I started releasing tapes & comics, Chris said he liked em which meant alot to me.
One night Chris told me he liked my drumming. I said ""well if you ever need some drums..."". He said ""yeah i would, but i cant be bothered with all that practicing"". I said ""oh i never practice"" and his eyes lit up. "
Stefan Neville has been making music under the name Pumice since 1991. Its always a struggle. The instruments are wearing out, the guitar gets harder and harder to tune, the tape loops get sicker and the batteries get flatter but Pumice perseveres. Recent albums are available from Soft Abuse records.
