The Crying Wolfs

George D. Henderson is founder/leader/guitarist/singer/songwriter of The Puddle (most recent release - The Shakespeare Monkey). For this project he called on two friends; Graeme Humphries, of The Able Tasmans and Humphries and Keen (most recent release - The Overflow) on fuzz organ, and experimental musician Duncan Bruce on electronic tanpura and production duties.

"When I lived in Dunedin in 1977 I jammed with Alex and Mike; later I went to Auckland and saw the Enemy, and from then on I was a confirmed fan of Toy Love. Chris was the Godfather of the punk and new wave scene, no doubt about that. It was a great score and a great honour when The Spies and the Wallsockets convinced Toy Love (playing without Alex, I believe) to perform at one of our Cuba Mall Sunday free concerts after their gigs at the Last Resort.

I first heard this song when the Tall Dwarfs first came to Dunedin, at the Oriental. Of course I was dying to hear Chris's new band and I was not to be dissapointed. All My Hollowness is a song very much in the Toy Love vein and it's easy for me to imagine Mike Dooley's drum rolls playing rhythm instead of the loop. I was swept away by the romantic chorus; recording the song I realised it's probably not meant to be romantic, but I sing it like I heard it that night.

I last saw Chris perfom solo at Otago university early this century, and was amazed by the maturity of his voice and the skillful way he managed the crowd; through all the changes in his style he still can't resist giving value for money. He is warm in person in a way that often doesn't come through in what can be rather sarcastic recordings. For this reason my favourite among his solo recordings is his most positive statement, ""Yes"". "
