The Inside Story - From Sam Wallace
I picked up Chris one morning to go to a book sale, where he noticed a very interesting book lying out with graphic photographs of warped human genitalia...
Unfortunately someone got to it just before him, & started looking through it. Undeterred, Chris stood next to guy, looked at him, looked at the book, and looked back at the guy in shock and disgust. The poor guy looked horribly embarrassed, put down the book and hurried away. Chris immediately picked it up and took it to the counter.
One of the images later became the subject of one of Barbara's sculptures.
Driving home, Chris asked me to hurry as he wanted to watch Oprah(!). I said I was not going to encourage any watching of crap daytime TV, and suggested he read his new books instead.
Chris said that this was a really interesting-sounding episode about people who are so hideous that they are unable to leave their homes.
When we got back, Chris raced in to turn on the TV. A few minutes later, he had turned off Oprah & said 'That was boring. They're just normal people but they *think* they're ugly'. And so Inside Story was born.
Some months later however, Chris asked if I could be part of his new music video...
All I had to do was lip-sync a few lines, and wear some mismatched clothing. I didn't know how the song went at that time, and certainly hadn't known it was about the Oprah people.
Chris & Liesha turned up and I read the lyrics. Although slightly horrified at what I'd agreed to, we did a practice take with me pretty much just reading the lyrics that Liesha was holding up. I went over it again a couple of times, then we filmed the take to be actually used.
A couple of weeks later I was talking to Chris who said he was happy with how the video turned out. He mentioned that my part had been accidentally erased but that he had used the practice take. I screamed and begged for a re-shoot but it was not to be.
Then one morning I heard Chris' name mentioned on a music video show. The presenter said he'd heard that Chris had somehow talked some friends into being portrayed as these grotesque characters...
Well, that's the Inside Story story... :)
